Fans of the Windham series will love revisiting the family and the various couples, but this can be read as a stand alone. However, if you have read the previous novels, I will say it is much more enjoyable to encounter these characters again. I fell in love with Sir Joseph Carrington by the end of the second page. He was certainly an uncomplicated man, demonstrated by the way he appreciated the simple things in life.
He never took anything for granted and, because of his experiences in the war, appreciated his blessings in life. He had a matter-of-fact attitude where he rarely held back the truth.
Also, the man had such an enormous heart. Joseph would do everything to protect others regardless of the cost. Even though he is a highly intelligent and charming man, his doubts about Louisa's feelings were always endearing. Joseph constantly thought himself unworthy of her affections because of their different social standings, but constantly proved his worth in every way that mattered.
Burrowes made it easy to see what a great partner Louisa would be for Joseph fairly early on.
